Dragonvale Tips & Tricks! (NO Friend Requests!)

T'is so funny, was visiting Poppy's far left island and there is a visitor trapped there, walking back and forth alongside the moon habita, not finding a way out.

Am I too impatient???

I am getting seriously irritated by not getting the results that various combos that you all have used, are supposed to create. That is, for instance, when I breed air/mud, I'm getting ...oh, I can't even remember, I just sell them off as soon as they're hatchable because I already have more than enough - like fireflys, storms, scorches, blazings... I really want another sandstorm, and a couple bluefires and frostfires. Keep getting ices, icebergs... another scorch or firefly just now from a scorch/cold cross (reputed to result in bluefire or frostfire).

Sigh. Am I just too impatient???

~~ Gurukarm ~~

Edit: maybe wrong levels? usually when I see combos mentioned, the level the dragons are at often isn't included.... Thoughts?

I did the same thing but then I got my answer.... I started to keep some of the new hybrids and used them to breed and then I started to get some of the harder dragons... Example sandstorm I was using air and mud over and over ... The same pair. I kept on getting mud... Instead of selling that one I feed it to lv4 put it in with air and a couple breeds later sandstorm.... Now I am not saying that it is guaranteed to work but it is definitely worth a shot...

Just keep trying.. I have noticed that with some people rares come in pairs..
Hope this helps

Poppy, you're spot-on overall. I'd like to make some suggestions and responses.

First, we need to recall what it was that really got us hooked and coming back for more, especially in the beginning. Those are the core things that need to be addressed and/or expanded on, rather than introducing whole new mechanics such as shrines. What hooked you? How has that scaled? Poorly.

Second, especially for high-level players, there is a discrepancy between hard-to-get dragons (Rainbow, Moon, Sun, Panlong) and easy-to-get dragons (everything else). And that discrepancy is huge. More "normal"ish dragons that are hard to get, such as sandstorm, bluefire, frostfire, would help. So, initially, you have this huge list of neato hybrids to get, then to seem to rapdily switch over to where they all just show up halfway by accident, which takes all the specialness out of them. Meanwhile, you give up in frustration over rares. Needs to be more middle ground.

Third, a huge impetus for enjoying design as you mentioned was seeing others' islands. I spent a lot of time early on visiting random islands and getting ideas and enjoying others' creations. As coin gets easier to acquire, the islands get smaller and smaller. Bigger islands and more themed decorations would make design a lot more intriguing.

Along these lines, the social aspect could be explored and enlargened, really driving that creativity. Either BFS could have a Park of the Week/Day/whatever function, or a Hall of Fame, or something, or perhaps a player could start a blog/site where islands/parks can be shown off, addicts can vote, etc. I know we can post screenshots here, but something more organized and formal would really catch on, I think. There could be in-game benefits for sharing, getting votes, etc., I dunno, lots of possibilities there.

Fourth, though this would seem pedantic to some, more achievements/goals might help folks. To some, achievements are an insult. To others, they really drive you on! And I don't mean just "hatch a blahblah egg." I mean interesting things, like putting certain dragons together, or design-related achievments, upgrading this or that, having only cold habs, I dunno. Weird stuff for fun.

But, yes, things can stagnate quickly. New dragons and associated flavor buildings are fantastic, and need to keep coming! But part of the problem we are seeing right now is that we just had one extremely hard new dragon added (Panlong), which everybody scrambled (and still does) to get. And then a very easy one (Love - relatively speaking way easier than Panlong, with very short breeding/hatching times to boot). So we went from this dogged determination that resulted in cheers of excitement when it finally came (or frustration), to a very easy prize that didn't involve much effort and yields a "meh" feeling.

Finally, more ways to decorate. More themes. Someone suggested being able to spray paint your island with snow, or sand, or whatever, depending on its theme. Wonderful idea! More themes would be great, too, kind of like the couple of asian-ish decorations that came with the Panlong, etc. Could do a set of castle/medieval pieces (decorations and functional buildings), a set of desert/oasis (not just a cactus), a set of winter wonderland, a set of this or that, to really differentiate the islands. Lastly, in this category, variations on the habitats. Maybe you want your water hab to look like a desert oasis, to fit in on an earthy island. Or snowy volcanos for your Oregon mountain island. A Japanese tea garden version of the plant hab. Stuff like that would really set the parks apart.

Just my thoughts. Love the game, love the dragons, love everybody's parks, and love new ways to decorate mine.

I hope we won't have problems with the Youth protection services as we do have those juvenile air dragons breeding 24 hours a day <g>

Ok I've been reading and reading ...... Now while I hear enormous amounts of great ideas you just have to remember 1 which is why you began to play this wonderful game and as for the shrine goals some just don't get it it's not a grind or a goal it's the simplest thing that escapes some people....... It's so that you have a pass time between the updates because the wait for each update can be 2 weeks to 1 month hopefully we will get more updates soon. Breed on and just enjoy for games sake. Breed on to the best forum on the net baby. Breed on!!!!!!!!!!

Well if the golden shrines are there just to pass time between updates, i would guess the next update is in 6 month or later Lol

Hi friends, I need your help! Over the past few days i noticed that I've been losing interest in DV!!! I have a lot of cr*p going on at home (MIL milking her knee injury) and I also put yet another moon in my nursery. I just can't get a sun and it's getting to me.

Has anybody else here gone through a period like this and come around again?

Ive been there iluli. I came back when they introduced the shrine concept and new islands. Im a creative person, so if i get bored with the game itself, i just redecorate my islands :)

As for the moon thing, i was the opposite. I hatched 5 suns in one week! Perhaps leave the sun hunt for a while and go on to something else. Then in a couple of days, hopefully u get ur sun :D

That's exciting as week ago if I recalled you didn't have any of the rareS. Congratulation! How is your wife and daughters game coming along?

You are correct.

They are doing okay. They still have 1 or 2 rares they're working on. But they both have reindeers and I don't, so I think they win.

Everything would be perfect except that one square. Oh well. It looks better then it did before anyways. Less cluttered

A Tip From Poppy

I sense a growing sense of malaise and loss of enthusiasm here and I think I know the cause. There are really only three elements to DV: (1) Breeding (2) Design (3) Striving for Shrines. Let's analyze those for a minute and how they each rate on the pleasure scale.

Breeding
Breeding can be a huge plus or a huge minus. It can be exhilarating when you get what you want and downright depressing when you have a long string of failures, which many on the list are experiencing right now. And for those who have a pair of every dragon, the thrill is gone completely, so breeding is lost.

Design & Building
This is only a plus, the most enjoyable part of game in my opinion. There's no downside to it. But as I go around clicking on party hats I see a lot of designs that never change.

Striving for Gold Shrines
This in my opinion, and despite my doing it, is simply a minus. There's a small sense of satisfaction when you reach a gold level, but the journey is a slow agonizing monkey motion grind - more like work than play.

So let's add it up. Let's say you're in a long losing streak breeding. Thats -1. And you've pretty much left your park design alone for a while. That's 0. And that you've been suckered into the gold shrine grind. That's -1. Your total score is -2. No wonder you're not having any fun!

My advice? Go work on the design of your park. Play. Forget the shrine grind. You'll enjoy yourself while waiting for the inevitable breeding break-through.

I think BFS made a serious mistake when they introduced the grind. They should give the opportunity for more islands (more design fun!), the opportunity to have more habitats and not be as confined. The shrine grind is not enjoyable and hurts the game. They need to expand in ways that are fun, not work.

FWIW,
Poppy

Thats what i think! Designing is the fun part. Making your island unique. Its saved me many a time from boredom :)

Your welcome ..... Hope your MIL docent give you too much grief if she does just feed her to your dragons lmao , and everyone on here PRAY FOR A SUN to come to iluli , I will be x x x

I have asked BFS about this many times and the only response I get is "the wizards are the ones who determine value for dragons. We don't mess with their magic" or something very similar. I'm not sure why I can't get a straight answer.

Perhaps we should be careful here. They may decide to sell it for a million ans also give it a 8hr breed time!

Well if the golden shrines are there just to pass time between updates, i would guess the next update is in 6 month or later Lol

When the gold shrines were first introduced I did an analysis and posted it here. My calculation showed that without spending any real money (a goal that has eluded me - much to BFS's delight, I'm sure) or jail breaking, it would take 5 years to get the seven gold shrines. That may have been a little pessimistic because I didn't have the strategies down that I do now. Some one else just did the same analysis on the DV Wiki and their conclusion was that it would take 3 years.

The rules that I have set for myself are to set a daily limit and to only buy gems - never buy gold coins or treats. That way I accelerate things but still have to do all the work (er, play) to produce results. The biggest accelerator for me by far was to spend about $140 (!) to set up the coin factory, which otherwise would have taken months by itself. I'm fortunate to have a very tolerant wife.

Once you have the proper strategy in place, there are only three ways to speed things up substantially: spend a lot of hours on the game, spend some money, or cheat. I opted for the first two because I'm just too impatient otherwise. And, as you know, my options are limited right now for things to do.

I have enormous respect for those who make steady progress without spending money and use skill and patience instead.

Poppy
