However I have a question, forgive me if it sounds basic but I've only been playing for a week.

What is the most economical way of reaching you 50 for the shrine?

Raise and sell the cheap dragons
Or
Breed the more exotic, raise & sell

You advice is much appreciated.

I found going for the hybrids was the better way, as each hybrid levelled to 10 counts towards both shrines. For example, i bred flower and poisen dragons to complete my fire and plant shrines. They dont take long to breed and this way your food goes further. Otherwise, you'd use twice as much food by feeding a plant dragon AND a fire dragon. Hope this helps

Also, if u need extra money to grow food, any air hyrbid sells for a million and an air dragon sells for half a million. Also, the shrine only begins counting once it has been built. So dont raise unnecessary dragons. Just sell them.

Got another moon with sonic and storm! Can any1 tell me what a 14 hour breeding time gets ya I forget.

14hr gives you a Mountain.. You can check the breeding duration by looking the description of each dragon egg in the market..

As advised by VDL04, better to go with the hybrids for the shrines.. But for earth, it is easy to buy the eggs and finish the shrines as all earth hybrids take more time..
As a whole you can complete the shrines as below:
Plant & Fire shrines - Breed Flower & poison dragons (takes 30 mins - 1 hr)
Earth - Buy Earth eggs (takes 5 mins)
Lightning and Cold - Breed Storm dragons (takes 5 hrs)
Air and Water - Breed Fog dragons (takes 8 hrs)
