Deleting a bookmark icon from home screen?

I'm having trouble deleting a bookmark icon from my home screen. I've read posts that say to press icons until they jiggle and then tap the "x" -- problem is, the icons jiggle but no "x" appears. I even checked the downloadable iPad manual which also indicates an "x" should appear once they icons start to jiggle. But none of the icons have an "x". What am I missing?

Never mind -- I figured out the answer. If your settings, restrictions, delete applications is set to "off," the "x" to delete does not appear.
