Not with a simple wipe with a microfiber cloth, but any chemical is not advised.

Yes it will, especially when the cloth used not in ideal condition. Best practice, put on a glossy screen protector like Spigen SGP Ultra Crystal protector and clean whenever you like. This way nothing will happen to the original screen. The most you'll need to replace the protector as it no longer able to providing crystal clear image or some scratches are really getting your way of viewing pleasure.

Well Frankly speaking the iPad screens dont need a Screen Protector. Only Sand can cause a Scratch on it. So if someone using it on Beach Put a Screen Guard or else not required !

Why would apple put a coating on the screen that would rub off when wiped with a cleaning cloth?

As to the original question, I use whatever t-shirt I happen to be wearing to clean all my iDevices. Works great.

A screen protector may be something you desire, but it is by no means necessary to protect the screen.
