Cannot connect to server

I am just about demented trying to get my e-mail a/c to work!
Broadband is working and everything else seems to be fine. BT are no help at all!
Somebody advised trying to connect via Yahoo. I did this, but I then got a message saying to switch off Private Browsing by going into Settings >Safari > Private Browsing. Sounded simple but my I-Pad2 doesn't show these 'words'. Can ANYONE help me?

If your iPad is up to date (which means iOS 7x), you'll find "Private" in Safari (the app), when you add a new tab, at the bottom, left.
