Cannot connect ipad to pc

why cant i connect my ipad to the pc to transfer files from my pc, whenever i try to connect it gives me a error message as "device not fount or unknows device".
Pls someone provide me the right solution....

Do you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer?If your iPad Is on iOS 5.1.1,you need the latest version of iTunes on your PC.
