I happened to be near an Apple store last Saturday afternoon. The first rep I walked near asked me if he could help me. I explained my problem, and that I didnt have any appointment because I hadn't planned to be in the area. He said "No problem" and fixed me up with a walk-in at the genius counter (they do everything on their iPhones in Apple stores...) and they were helping me within a few minutes. They asked permission to restore my iPad, and explained if that fixed the camera, it was software related, but if it was still inoperative they would replace the iPad. A half hour or so later I walked out with a new iPad - with a working camera.
