I thought when you fill the containers. On the right you should see the amount you get for each container you fill.

you get the cash right away... the money drop shows up behind the port screen, if you close it quickly after filling a container you will see it.

Hm - have decided to postpone the attack on the bridge for another week or so.
I will today buy the cosmetics factory. Then I will save money in the coming 4 days or so. That should enable me to update:

-Chemical plant to level 3
-Food plant to level 5
-Radio factory to level 2
-Cosmetics factory to level 2
-Furniture factory to level 4
-Sawmill to level 5
-Garage to level 32

Everything else is already level 5. And then with a big hammer get the job done.

I did the same thing before. Saved 10 mil and did a whole bunch of upgrades and a land purchase.
