According to a report in The Korea Times, which was picked up by AppleInsider today, Apple has just placed a $240 million order with Samsung Electronics for 3 million iPad displays, according to an anonymous source. The anonymous source also told The Korea Times that the display and touch-screen interface is the iPad’s most expensive component, costing $80 for all models, roughly 5 times as much as the iPhone 3GS screen.
Another executive from Samsung Mobile Display, a flat-screen joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDI, told the newspaper that the company was also in “deep talks†to supply Apple with LCD panels for the forthcoming 4G iPhones and iPads.

This news follows on from a previous announcement a few months back that Samsung’s rival, LG Display, had received an $800 million order from Apple to make 10 million LCD panels for the iPad. Clearly Apple is being smart as usual and not putting all its display-sourcing eggs in one basket.

So that's 13 million units? Someone from Apple told me that their projections for initial sales (and I'm not sure what that time frame is) was about 6 1/2 million units.
