Apple ID Question

When I got my iPad, I used my then current email address as my Apple ID. However, I lost the password for that email account, I can't log into it, so now I use a new email account.

Now, I'm not sure which address to use with Apple. If I use the one I originally registered with Apple, I can't access it, and there are certain features of iPad that require your Apple ID, e.g. iCloud (which I haven't registered yet). If Apple sent me email, it would go to the old email address that I can no longer log in to. OTOH, if I use my current email address, I presume Apple won't recognize it.

Can anyone please advise me what to do?
