Ina Fried at All Things D reports today on Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook’s comments about the iPad during his conference call with analysts on Tuesday. With yesterday’s third quarter earnings figures revealing that Apple has sold a staggering 9.25 million iPads in the quarter that ended in June, which was basically every iPad it was able to build and get on the shelves, Cook said that Apple believes that some of those 9.25 million iPad customers bought their iPad instead of buying a Mac. Apparently more iPads than Macs were sold to the K-12 education market, for example, which Cook says Apple “would never have predicted.†

“It’s clear that some customers chose to purchase an iPad instead of a new Mac,†said Cook during the call, adding, “even more customers chose to purchase an iPad over a Windows PC.â€

Cook also told the analysts that there is much more Windows PC business to cannibalize than there is Mac business.

As far as Apple’s previous iPad supply and demand issues are concerned, Cook said that in the first weeks of July Apple has finally managed to get the supply-demand balance just about right in some countries.
