Can someone tell me how to join launches please?

If you have completed your launch pad when you click on it a window will pop up showing the collections you need to complete to launch. If you have completed the required 4 collections click "complete" and a new launch window will open. This will show any launches currently in progress. You can join a launch by clicking on that launch and then clicking "join". You can also start your own launch by clicking "start a new one". There may not be any launches in progress in which case you can exit the screen and check again later by clicking on the launch pad.
