Wrapping up a show segment on aboriginal artisans. Here's a sample of some of the work they brought to the studio this morning. The fellow pictured is a craftsman. He finished the tie here's wearing - just before the interview.

I do like the items, AA. I'm sure the viewers will appreciate the broadcast. Could you post a link to the show?

How long does it take to chain up? Do you chain all wheels ?

Here you go, AA. Just found this photograph I took of tire chains in place. I don't belong to the school of thought that believes you need bungees all over the chains to "hold them in place", as you can see.

Just realized, I took a photograph of someone else's wheels. Oh, well. The picture serves it purpose.

Okay, novice here, but do you have to move the truck to that chain all the way round! I've always wondered how you get it onto toe big wheels. Sorry for stupid question.

Is that guy part aboriginal Admiral? He doesn't look it to me........or are they just creating aboriginal pieces?

Very nice pieces but unlike any aboriginal art pieces we have here. I have noticed aboriginal references to do with Canada before as far as street names.....I'm a little confused by the connection though. What is the connection? if you not mind filling me in on it.

Don't mind at all. :)

Aboriginals are Canada's first peoples. They are the history of Canada, prior to the arrival of European explorers 500 years ago.

The man in my photograph is aboriginal.
And while he is strikingly different in appearance to the Aborigines of Australia, they are thought to be distant kin.

The ancestors of Canada's indigenous peoples, are thought to have come to North America 12,000 years ago. Likely from several different parts of Asia and Polynesia, following several different routes.

Others may have crossed the ancient ice fields that once connected Europe and North America. It's believed the Inuit who live in Canada's high arctic take their heritage from that group.

Various clans / bands of aboriginals populate all areas of Canada.

The Wiki link below gives you a snap shot.

This is more hardcore but enjoyable to read.

The Archangel

Sorry for the late reply....I failed to put in my post sandwich. In Southern California grilled cheese sandwich is a must with tomato soup. BTW he got his turkey tonight!

Sorry, Hayles. I missed this earlier. Yes, you have to move the truck onto the chains. Methods vary somewhat, but I've found that the easiest way is to lay the chains on top of the tires and reverse onto them. Then it's just a case of hooking the ends together and tightening the snail cams.

They are illegal in the UK, by the way. The ones you might see hanging from trucks there are probably heading for Italy, where the law requires them to be carried 6 months a year.

Reverse? Oh, that's ingenious. I would never have thought it was that easy.

No wonder I've never seen them here! I bet they don't want the roads ruined. We probably don't have snow long enough to warrant them. Thanks Kevin.

Sometimes it doesn't matter how many chains you have on. This one slid backwards down a hill and came to rest where you see it.

A bit further and it would have gone right off the edge.

Quite a few, but nothing life-threatening. The best method I've found for avoiding trouble is to read the potential situation before you get into it. We have a great law in Canada, which I have used several times. The right to refuse unsafe work is enshrined in Canadian law, and it's not just a right; it's a responsibility. If I don't think it's safe, I don't go in.
