I am thinking about buying a tablet to replace my now dead laptop. I would like something smaller and easy to carry when I travel. I use it mainly for email, net research and book reading. Unfortunately I have no idea what size (as in computing) I would use. I understand that there are different gigabytes sizes but got very confused by the salesman as to how much I would use. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi and welcome to the Forum!! This is a question that all of us have had to face and it's an entirely personal one. With what you have said you will use the iPad for well then I think the 16gb one will be enough for you, but having said that once you do get an iPad you will be truly amazed with what it can do for you. There are all the different apps that will surely entice you and before you know it you could have oodles of them. Do you like taking leisurely drives and traveling, there is GPS which I for one use quite frequently, the screen size makes it so easy to view and then there are all the different location maps available for travel. Then also photos, music and movies, of which the iPad is just superb for listening to and viewing these types of entertainment. Some of us use it to run our daily lives and quite frankly put our lives on the iPad. The list really does go on and on for what we can use this wonderful piece of technology for and before you know it you have run out of room and wish you had bought a bigger one. I have seen many posts of just this. If you are good at managing your iPad, you can have apps, music and movies stored on your PC or laptop and just have what you are doing right now on the iPad. That's not me, I got the 64gb 3G, and I am so happy I did. Have at look at all these topics and see what interests you also have a look around the Forum to see what everyone is using theirs for. Hopefully this will make your decision an easier one.
Good luck!!

I always recommend buying the most memory and best connectivity you can afford. You cannot upgrade the device later if you need more, and it will extend the useful life of the device as your use increases over time.

Hi there and welcome.

If your laptop has died and you don't have another computer you need to remember to get the Apple Store guys set your iPad up in-store, they are really helpful like that!

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend.......and please don't forget to read the rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. A link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/

Finally, if you still haven't had enough, how about a video explaining about our other forums (note:you may want to play this at half speed but hey, why shouldn't Phil be excited about our forums!)

Good to hear from you. You’ll find a whole bunch of iPad enthusiasts in this Forum who are only too willing to help other iPad owners and to hear of their experiences. Don’t be afraid to post any questions you may have or use the ‘Search’ button near the top of the Forum web page. I usually find I discover one new interesting and useful piece of information about my iPad every day - and often not even what I was looking for!!

Hope to hear from you soon with your thoughts about the iPad.

Have fun and enjoy your iPad

If you don’t already have it you can download a copy of the iPad manual for free.
