    Hmm there is no definitive way at the moment. If you double tap the home button you will awe apps that are currently open.

    If you have a jail broken device you can use Sbsettings that allows you to close down apps and clear the cache etc which is what I think you are wanting.

    If you have iOS 5, go to Settings > General > Usage. Lots to look at there.
