With respect to your question, the issue of light leakage is pretty much history since the glass is broken. That said, although broken screens are not covered under Apple's warranty, there are many, many accounts about Apple replacing iPad's with broken screens, etc. as a one-time favor. If you have an Apple store nearby I'd make a Genius appointment and throw yourself on their mercy. Odds are you will be pleasantly surprised. If there's no store nearby you could contact Apple Support directly and plead your case.
