He's looking at you because if he were looking to the right you'd be able to see all of his ear and see the ear canal. Also you wouldn't be able to see his entire iris either, just half of it.

Look at what just bloomed on our Blue Jack Oak Tree, a couple of orchids. I believe they are in the Brassavola family. They smell very sweet after dusk, and are sometimes called "Lady Of The Night"
