icon placement

After I upgraded to iOS5 I was able to put icons where I wanted to. You know, put three in the first row skip a row and then put some on the next row. For some reason it has quit allowing me to do that. Any idea what I may have done?

To the best of my knowledge that has never been possible on a stock iPad; iOS 5 or not.
