Help with iTunes/iPad sync problems

    My son got a new iPad and hooked it up the other day to try and sync it. SOmetimes iTunes will recognize and sometimes it won't. he also cannot get it to sync at all. It goes to step 1 of 7 and eventually times out stating that the sync failed to start. I have re-installed itunes several times and every time I do it gives me the 42404 error and says not all components have installed. I have gone throught the repair process also to no avail. I have restored the iPad twice now.
    Does anyone have any suggestions that knows more than I do about iPads? I am running iTunes 10.5 on Windows Vista. Thanks for any help I don't know what else to do.
