AA,
The news of the accident made the 9 O'clock news on Radio 2. We were told that one person died. The train was parked up, the brakes failed and it rolled backwards into the town where the explosion took place.

Yes. Finally got confirmation late yesterday that all family members were accounted for.

Thanks to all here for your concern and kind words.

That's a relief AA. I'm glad to read that.

Now the authorities can turn to repairing the damage to property and railway property. I expect there will be safety measures taken up?

That is really good news AA, I am relieved to hear it. I hope that none of them were injured.

No injuries. An aunt and uncle who maintain an apartment downtown, were at their summer home on the lake. Otherwise they would have been in the middle of the conflagration.

In my youth I spent many summers in Lac Megantic. It was built as a railway town. My grandfather was a conductor with the Canadian Pacific Railway. Sometimes I would ride the train with him. I worked too - sweeping the station floor.

On the world stage what happened here is a blink of an eye. But for people who know the place and it's people, it's a tragedy.

About 40-60 people are unaccounted for and presumed dead. A high toll for such a small community.

I hope the rehearsals and competition go well Johanna :)

They didn't. :-( We ended at the 10th/last place.
Everyone's disappointed, sad, miserable and angry at the jury members. (Including me.)
We would understand this decision, if we'd really had the worst performance, but there were other marching bands in this competitions with more and worse mistakes than ours, that ended up somewhere from place 5 - 3.
Can you imagine that the band where one member side-slipped, and the conductor gave wrong signs and almost dropped his mace, won the third place - compared to our 10th, where nothing as bad as this happened?

Great news AA personally, tragic for the town.
Sad news Johanna

Fantastic news Andy Murray won Wimbledon for Great Britain. 77 years over. Watching highlights now. I was at a picnic celebrating my 23 years of marriage to my fantastically wonderful husband.

Woohoo Hayley! Congratulations on your 23 years of marriage!

That is certainly something to celebrate! Here's to the next 23 years! Cheers! ;)

I'm sorry to hear that Johanna, that must be very disappointing considering the work and hopes you put into it. And I can understand how you all must feel. It is always disheartening when you see people in authority, like the judges presumably there due to their knowledge and experience, make unsatisfactory judgements like that. But hey! There's always next year and hopefully you enjoyed other parts of your trip.:) And enjoy the rest of your break!
