See, my 3rd gen can. It tries to jump out of my hands anytime I'm not on soft carpet . My iPad wants no landing pad when it flees my pad, much too brave for me

You could switch back and forth while using one when the other charges. That's what I am going to do!

That's exactly what I do with the iPads. Plus, the iPad1 has Google maps on it, which has a number of advantages over Apple maps. However, Apple maps has those great 3D views of cities and some landmarks.
