Actually, It was exciting to see the edelweiss when in Europe a few years back. But surprisingly I did not see as much in Austria or Switzerland where I expected it. We actually saw paddocks full of this lovely flower in northern Italy, where everyone took it for granted and it did not seem a rare plant.

In Austria, it's protected since the 19th century, and is not allowed to be picked. But nevertheless it's an endangered flower. However, I can only speak for my country.
