It was only because I was up really late and was tired. It doesn't work if I'm just on it for an hour or two...Joining the insomniacs club!
I was wondering whether, in Goofy's case, using an iPad last thing is the equivalent of counting sheep. Now there's an idea for an app with universal appeal; Sheep!

Hmm, I was still logged in, and my iPad was on, but Safari was in the background. Maybe it automatically turns off your status light after a period of inactivity?
I'm planning on staying up just a LITTLE bit later tonight to catch up on podcasts. I'm going to turn off the WiFi in bed so I won't be tempted
