Two iPad2s problems

My wife has had an iPad 2 for some time and I have an iPhone 4 -we have had no problems with FaceTime or anything else so far
I have just got an ipad2 for myself but we cannot use FaceTime - the devices either show as busy or unavailable
or seem to connect for a second before disconnecting
We only have one Apple ID - might that be the problem.?

For FaceTime to work you will both need your own email addresses to contact each other on your iPads.
