Sit-on-top Notepad style App?

Hi all, I'm just about to start some maths study and it would be really useful if I had a notepad / jotter type app that would sit on top of the main maths study app that I'll be using. It doesn't need to be any more sophisticated than that, just something that will let me do some workings out for each problem I'll be working on.

Does such a thing exist or is one app open on top of another not possible on an IPad?

Can you not open two apps for this then do the four finger swipe between them? It's faster than a speeding bullet (almost)!
