Is there a way to take a screen shot of a small area on the ipad?

Specifically I want to be able to take a picture of individual app logos on my ipad and include them into a word doc or possibly Powerpoint or keynote. I want to create a list of appropriate apps for a group of our teachers.

No, the only kind of screenshot you can make is of the entire screen. After saying that, there is a way to do what you want. The screenshots you make are saved to your camera roll. You can enlarge part of the screenshot and copy the desired enlargement by making a screenshot of the enlarged portion of your original screenshot.
Look at these examples.

IMO, scifan's idea is probably best, but you can also use an app to crop the screen shot. For example, you can use the [free] app Skitch.

Once you take the screen shot, open the Skitch app (and the photo) and there is a crop function. You select the area you want to keep and then you can save it back to Photos. Then, you can use that new picture however you wish. You could even go further with scifan's idea and crop the picture created after zooming in:

Obviously not perfect on something with rounded corners - but still, pretty darn close. So, you can make the pictures whatever size and then drop out the extra bits you don't want.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Of course, there are more cropping apps than Skitch (and Skitch does more than just crop). It's just that it's free and works a treat, for me. Of course, YMMV.

Here's the skitch cropping method mentioned by Mickey330.

I prefer using the Skitch app over the Photos cropping tool for screen shots. You can't do as much with it (cropping wise), but that simplicity makes it quicker.

If you also use Evernote, the integration is a bonus; and it's about to get better.

There is a crop function in the Photos app...click on a photo, select Edit and crop is at the bottom of the screen...
