Slot Racing HD is a deceptively simple yet addictive game from Brazilian developer Quantix Games. The title really says it all, it’s a slot car racing game for the iPad only. This is for everyone who wished they had one of those amazing slot car racing games growing up, or in fact anyone who actually did have their very own Scalectrix set. No, scratch that, I don’t fall into either of those categories and I still really enjoyed playing Slot Racing HD! The game features a choice of seven different cars, from an F1 racing car (F1 is massive in Brazil), to flash sports cars and a couple of really cool Jeep-type vehicles. It’s a one- to two-player game, so you can either choose both your car and the CPU’s car, or play with a friend and let them choose their own car. Currently there are seven different circuits to choose from, and Quantix has already teased two new tracks that are on the way very soon, Moctezuma and O2, on its Facebook page, so that’s something to look out for over the coming weeks. You can choose to race for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 laps. Each of the circuits looks really nice, with gorgeous bright graphics and lots of detail. Each has a theme, as you might expect, and I particularly like the snowy Alpine track and the neon-tastic Vegas Arena track, but they’re all equally fun to race on. The gameplay is simple: just press the throttle button in the bottom-right corner of the screen, and then when the car careens off the track, which it inevitably will, touch it after the indicated time ends to put it back on the track. Exactly how long you have to wait before you can set your car back on its path can be amended in the Options, with 1 sec being Easy, 2 secs being Medium, and 3 secs being Hard. Just as in the real-life slot-car games, the real skill and the real fun of the gameplay comes from trying to strike a happy medium between going fast enough to beat your opponent on the straight sections of the track, while taking it easier around the corners, yet still not letting your opponent get the better of you. Overall a really fun game that you’ll find hard to put down, and even more fun when playing against a friend.
