On my new out of the box 64 gig air it says in the settings>about that the capacity is 56.7 gig what happened to the other 7 gig i know the OS takes up space but does it take that much?

Welcome to our forums regardless of what operating system you use, ie. Apple Os, iOS, windows android you name it you loose up to 10% of storage.. Johanna's link explains this. In other words it is normal....the same apples to external devices like hard drives and USB sticks.
