Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Follow the steps below and this should solve your problem, it is also a good idea to clear our cookies, history and Web Data in Safari to free up ram. Settings - Safari - Clear History and Clear Cookies and Data. Go to the advanced tab here and select Website Data and you will see all the data that is saved each time you use Safari, you can clear this out too.

Do the four finger swipe up or double press the home button to reveal your multi task bar along the bottom. It will show all the apps that you have opened at one time or another. Long press one of these apps until they start to jiggle and red minus signs will appear above them all. Press all the minus signs, this will close them, not delete them. It's a good idea to do this regularly just to keep them all running smoothly, I do mine every night. Check and see if it is operating now. if not a restart is in order.

Restart: Press and hold the power off button, the one at the top right. You will see a slide appear to power off, slide this and the screen will go dark and a Whirly will appear. When the Whirly disappears your iPad is now off. Press the power button again until the Apple logo appears, this will take a few seconds and your iPad will start again. You should restart your iPad occasionally also as it will keep it running smoothly. Now see if it is operating. If not a reset is the next step.

Reset: Hold the power off button and the home button simultaneously, keep holding them in and you will see the power off slide appear and disappear, wait until you see the Apple logo appear before releasing the buttons. It will take a little longer for your iPad to start. This is a reset. Don't worry about doing this it will not delete any of your apps.

When your iPad begins to behave strangely these are the first steps you should do to rectify it. Let us know how you go, good luck!!

There is much confusion over the "memory" available in an iPad. Apple intentionally confuses the issue for competitive reasons. In fact, whether you have a 16G, 32G, or 64G iPad, you have the same amount of "memory" (as conventionally defined.) That's 256mb for the iPad 1 and 512mb for the iPad 2. The gigabyte references (16, 32, 64) are to storage, not to RAM. If you find that your iPad is truly "running out of memory," try using an app that clears memory. Xsysinfo is useful for this purpose.

Don't forget that for the iPad 1 it has to be on iOS 5.0.1 to have multitasking gestures, so if the OP in on 5.0, the four finger swipe won't work. :)

Yes I slipped there, thanks for that. Nice Avatar by the way, but I did so like your earlier one too!

You mean well I'm sure, but Xsysinfo isn't available through the apple store. I suspect you have "jailbroken?" your iPad and might have forgotten that there are many of us that didn't do that. Or Xsysinfo is no longer available through Apple or is under another name.
