Hello,

I am new to iPadforums. I have an iPad 3 (5.1.1) and a jailbroken iPhone 4Gs (5.1.1).

I am most interested in learning more about:

1) The best Cydia tweaks/apps for my jailbroken phone (any good Twitter related tweaks/apps? What else?)
2) If there is an alternative to Cydia
3) The benefits of jailbreaking my iPad 3
4) If I should update my iOS on my iPad and iPhone? Pros? Cons? How does it affect speed?
5) If I do update my iOS on either device, will i be able to jailbreak them?

Any insights into any of these questions would be awesome!

Thanks,

Lisa

Hi there Lisa and welcome.

You might want to check out the hacking section of the forums where all things to do with Jailbreaking are discussed http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend. If you can't find the answer you need and you post a question then give as much info as you can to help members help you i.e. iPad 1 or 2, etc. and iOS version and name of app if the problem is with a specific app........and please don't forget to read the forum rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://help.apple.com/ipad/6/ and here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for iOS 4, 5, 6, etc.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/ and for iPhone users, come and join in the discussion over at http://www.iphoneforums.net

Hello,

1) The best Cydia tweaks/apps for my jailbroken phone (any good Twitter related tweaks/apps? What else?)

If I may - I suggest a visit to our sister forum at iphoneforums.net for the best Cydia stuff for your iPhone. Some tweaks are iPhone exclusive and I think it's best you look there for phone stuff. Over at that forum are the iPhone experts. Here there be iPads! :)

2) If there is an alternative to Cydia

Not that I am aware of. Well, not as large a selection and collection of tweaks and themes. You can go directly to the source, but most of the more popular ones are readily available from Cydia. There are some theming sites available on the 'Net, however. There is Themeit (which, actually, can be downloaded from Cydia in addition to getting it from the Net) and iThemesky, an Internet theme site. Usually, I just stick with Cydia, however, though YMMV.

3) The benefits of jailbreaking my iPad 3

Well, really, the benefits of jail breaking an iPad are about the same as that of an iPhone. You get access to the file system and you can install most of the tweaks that you can on the iPhone. I, personally, love my iPad3 with Overboard, SwipeSelection and iKeywi on it (you can also get them for the iPad. Have a look at this thread for the best tweaks members have found for the iPad: http://www.ipadforums.net/showthread.php?t=25824

If you do decide to jail break the iPad3, see this thread for a guide on how to use either one of the two jail break tools available: http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/24377-jailbreaking-methods-ipad.html

4) If I should update my iOS on my iPad and iPhone? Pros? Cons? How does it affect speed?
5) If I do update my iOS on either device, will i be able to jailbreak them?
Any insights into any of these questions would be awesome!

Lisa

If you update the iPad3 to iOS 6, there is no jail break for it [yet]. For the iPhone 4, I believe there is a tethered jail break for it on iOS 6 (a visit to iphoneforums.net would tell you for sure). So, i'd recommend not updating the iPad if you want to jail break it (it works fine on iOS 5.1.1 jail broken). Then, you'll have to decide on the iPhone.

Hope some of this helps.
