Hi,

I'm a UK Mac man (since purchasing my first home computer in 1990) and am now thinking of joining the great iPad fraternity too. A couple of pointers would be welcome, so here's my thoughts - all feedback good.

I reckon I'll be a light iPad user - surfing the 'net, email, photos, that sort of thing, so whilst I appreciate that 2 is lighter (and comes with a speedier processor) than 1 I don't reckon the camera/speed thing would be overly impactful on my user experience. Equally I would be getting a wifi only model as I have a negligible need to be connected beyond that. Equally those extra ounces saved by buying a 2 count for little as it is likeley to be mostly lying around the house rather than being carted about a lot. So, my current thinking is that a good secondhand 1 would be fine, keeping the £££s saved against, for example, a brand new iPad, for other things - but I am more than happy to take the views of the experts who have been around these great bits of kit for some time.

cheers,

Stockers

Hi there and welcome.

My personal view having both a 1 and a 2 is that I expected to do about the same as you when I bought my first iPad......it didn't take long for me to realise that I could do so much more. So, as much as I love my iPad 1 I wouldn't even consider buying one now, knowing what I now know. Maybe it's worth looking on the refurb section of the Apple Store at apple.com as they normally have some good deals on refurb iPad 1's and 2's.

There is lots of good advice and info on here plus plenty of members all too willing to help with any problems.

Remember, search is your friend. If you can't find the answer you need and you post a question then give as much info as you can to help members help you i.e. iPad 1 or 2, iOS version and name of app if the problem is with a specific app........and please don't forget to read the rules http://www.ipadforums.net/forum-rules-help-info/2119-forum-rules-everybody-please-read.html

These are the hacking section rules for all you jail breakers (and would be jail breakers) http://www.ipadforums.net/ipad-hacking/2892-hacking-section-rules-please-read.html

We also have an app for this forum. The link to download the app is: Discussion Forum for iPad Users for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for both iOS 4 and 5.

If you have other Apple products or are interested in other Apple kit then why not join our sister forum too at http://www.appleforums.net/

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

I too didn't realise all the many tasks the iPad is very good at handling. At this stage I would not buy an ipad 1 either, what would worry me is the ram issue (memory), iPad 1 has 256mb the iPad 2 has 512mb and the new iPad has 1gb. We will now see updates that will no longer be able to be done for the ipad1 too. Another difference between wifi and 3G is the ability for true GPS capability, this is only available on a 3G iPad and as the chip is built into the iPad you don't even need a sim to be able to use it and the size of the iPad screen is superb for this task. Hope this helps in your decision making.

2 very informative threads from which you will learn many tips and shortcuts for the IPad.

Also, Apple is mot supporting the 1 anymore starting this fall. You won't be able to update to iOs 6 this fall and will have a dinosaur on your hands.

Thanks for the info - I hadn't yet noted the RAM situation, nor indeed the fact that updating a 1 to iOS 6 wouldn't be possible. All good feedback, thanks.

Since you are a Mac user can I recommend the Screens app.
It's just the best way to control your machine from your iPad, though for streaming video I actually prefer Splashtop.....

I bought an iPad when it first came out, never upgraded to the newer models, and now it's really slow. It's too bad: I didn't think a machine made in 2010 would become a dinosaur so quickly...

Do you do a little maintenance on your iPad as you may notice a difference in speed. Close all apps completely regularly, clear out your History and Cookies in Safari, a restart once a month and a reset occasionally will all help keep your iPad running smoothly, especially an iPad 1.
