Need help how to use, imessage

Hi folks, I still confuse how to use imessage?

When I try to sent message from imessage to my friend phone number,
Imessage gave me alert : that number is not registered in Imessage,
When I try to find how to register, imessage I can't find it....

Please help me

Hi ash- is your friend's phone updated to ios5? She needs to have that in order to receive our iMessage. Her number may not work if she is not running 5.0 or greater.

You friend also has to open Messages' settings and enable iMessage on their iPhone. That's when the number gets registered.

You can register someone else's phone number. They have to do it.
