M3u Music Files / How do I download music shared by email?

I requested a friend to share a particular song with me to add to my music library. She sent it as a M3u music file via email. When I attempted to open it I only had an PDF file and that didn't work. I searched and downloaded a couple of free apps but they appear to be for downloading music from the Internet. What app could I get that would allow me to share and receive music on my IPAD 2 and then store it to my music library?

Where is this music originating from? Is it music you have created yourself, ripped from CDs or bought from iTunes or some other source?
