Could anyone please explain why my keyboard has split in half and is positioned on each side of the screen about half way up.

I guess somehow you managed to tap the keyboard on both sides and dragged it apart, if it looks like this:




If you want to get it in one piece again and dock it, do the following steps: tap 1 and slide to 2 as soon as it appears.
