Bloomberg reports that Samsung has had some good news and bad news today as the result of a court case that is currently taking place in London. As far as the good news is concerned, the judge in the case, Judge Colin Birss, found in favour of Samsung and ruled that Samsung’s design for three of its Galaxy tablets does not infringe Apple’s registered designs for the iPad. As far as the bad news is concerned, the reason that the judge gave for ruling that the Galaxy tablet designs did not infringe on Apples designs was because “they are not as cool,†as Apple’s designs. Ouch! The judge also said that the tablets “do not have the same understated and extreme simplicity which is possessed by the Apple design.â€

Bloomberg writes that following the ruling, Samsung said that it showed that Galaxy tablets do not infringe on Apple’s design rights, and in turn, Apple’s spokesman Alan Hely said, speaking generally and not about this specific ruling, “It’s no coincidence that Samsung’s latest products look a lot like the iPhone and iPad. This kind of blatant copying is wrong and, as we’ve said many times before, we need to protect Apple’s intellectual property.â€
