Is IPad use a tool for study skills or a distraction?

A significant number of 5th grade students received IPADS for Christmas. We have noticed that these students are not performing as well as they were prior to their introduction to the IPAD. As we are speeding toward a 1:1 program, we were wondering if other schools are seeing similar results?

Is there a plan on how the iPads will be used with the students? Are there apps pre-installed for various activities? For your IT staff and involved teachers, do you have specific curriculum goals you want to accomplish, using the iPads?
