Iphone 4 hotspot question

I use my iPhone 4 as a hotspot for my iPad 2. My problem is that if my iPad goes to sleep, when I wake it up I have to go through the whole connection process again. When the iPhone goes to sleep there is no problem. Is this normal or do I need to change any settings?

Have you set up in 'Settings' -> 'Join known networks automatically'?

The iPad doesn't see the iPhone network to join until it is re-established on the iPhone.
