iPad or Laptop?

Hi all you i Pad fans out there,
I am a 57yr old female and have very poor eyesight, I am very interested in purchasing the new iPad 3 and wondered if someone could advise me if it would be best for me investing my money into an iPad or laptop computer ? and for reasons there of, thank-you Yvonne

This is a loaded question but I will try. My opinions are based solely on my own personal experiences and needs.

First, it is important to say each device offers its own specific and unique abilities and toolsets in addition to sharing the ability to perform many common tasks so with that in mind......


If your needs are casual in that email, web browsing, reading, sharing photos, and consuming music, movies, and other common media are your primary interests then the iPad fills that niche very well.

If your needs are more of a business or technical nature like writing, accounting, or are dependent upon windows only applications then a laptop is likely your better choice.

I am keenly aware that the iPad can perform business functions but personally I prefer a laptop when working only because it is what I cut my teeth on. I don't like iPad add ons like blue tooth keyboards as I believe they defeat the intended purpose of the iPad.

Too many devices are already trying to become another. Phones want to be tablets. Tablets want to laptops. Laptops want to be desktops. Tvs want to be pcs, gaming consoles want to be content providers and the list goes on. I guess what I'm saying is a case could be made for either direction you choose.

Personally I would recommend trying an iPad first. I think you will find it fulfills most if not all your casual needs.

One other thing. iPad has accessibility functions one which is the zoom function that would help immensely with vision. Windows has similar functionality as well. The retina display on the iPad displays text very crisply which laptops don't have....yet. I'm not saying you can't read a laptop display, I'm saying retina does it better...for now.

For what it's worth, I'm looking at the ipad2 for the same reason -- my husband has extremely poor vision, has been determined legally blind. I've heard there are some apps for the ipad that really enhance vision, one that can "read" to you (ocr scanning?). I'd like to find out more about these -- if anyone knows anything about them.

Glad to help where able. I'm not as resourceful as one might think. I have however taken the time to learn advanced search techniques available in google. They are effective and not widely known or utilized.....and they ROCK!
