IPad Getting Hot

So I was reading somewhere, can't remember where now, what to do with the iPad getting really, really hot. Mine has been hot enough to be quite uncomfortable. While some people have taken theirs back, someone said they solved their overly hot device by totally discharging their unit, then recharging completely. I decided to try it.....shoot me in the foot. That seems to be working. Been using about 45 minutes and still very, very mildly warm where before was hot enough to not want to hold it. Maybe there is something to that. I need to try it with a movie that's long.

Well, I do believe that worked. I definitely have a much cooler device. I've read, proofed, watched a movie, turned up the brightness, and running much cooler. Wonder what essentially recalibrating the battery would affect that or make work. Would be an interesting tidbit to tuck away. The battery seems to run longer, too. Simple little trick. Have had it on right now for 30 minutes, and very comfortable to hold.

So I just bought the ipad3 last Saturday and I'm officially in love, though after about 30 minutes my left side of my iPad starts to get slightly warm, not hot or uncomfortable...but warm, is EVERYONE having this problem or is this something I should return? I don't want my iPad to get warm at all, I want it completely cool. I'm running the battery out now hoping this helps.
But does anyone have a new iPad that stays COMPLETELY cool? Or is this not possible?

1) No, everyone is not having this problem
2) No, this is not something you should return
3) Make sure the screen is not on 100% brightness, as that will cause it to get warm
4) if you want it cool always, you may want to return it and get an iPad 2.

This iPad as a larger capacity battery, a new GPU chip, and 4X the number of pixels that have to be lit to deliver you an image. Its thermal characteristics are that it will get warm under certain conditions (like 10% max bright screen and heavy graphics). I turned my screen on 100% brightness and used a temp probe on the back. After 36 minutes, the back was at 111 deg F. Consumer reports measured 116 deg F under different conditions. These temps are within Apples specs and the parts inside are able to ensure these kinds of temps with no problems (they are not human, so what is hot and/or warm for us is not hot and/or warm for them). Most chips can withstand temps to nearly 100 deg C (212 deg F).

So, the bottom line is if you don't like this, either use your iPad in a way such that you are driving the screen and GPU hard and it will stay cool. Or, if you are not willing to do that, and you can't live with these kinds of temps, you have to go back to an iPad 2. I never saw my iPad 2 get even slightly warm to the touch. The new iPad will get warm.

I quite like the fact it gets warm when used, it was a bit chilly in our house earlier today so having my ipad on my lap whilst watching a vid on it kept me a bit warmer... i was a little worried about irradiating my nads, but, hey, my lap was warm!

Lol. Do you know I was thinking the same thing when everyone was talking about this. My laptop is way hotter than anything that iPad can create.

It only reached 116 degrees in CR testing, at max brightness, on very complex gaming apps, when plugged in. On straight battery it is much cooler, 94 degrees - less than body temperature. I reheat my coffee if it gets that cool! By comparison, my MB Pro is at 130 degrees as I type this.

I think there maybe something to this making sure you do a full discharge and recharge when you first get your device. I have had my iPad 3 for about 2 1/2 weeks now and I replaced my iPhone 4S under warranty one week ago.

My iPad 3 never got any more than warm to the touch but my iPhone 4S got very very warm to the touch. "I'm refraining from saying the word hot". My "old" iPhone 4S, I don't recall ever getting that warm. Anyway, I decided to take both devices and do a full battery drain about three days ago and then recharge and guess what? My iPhone 4S no longer gets really really warm to the touch and my iPad 3 is also running cooler.

My iPad 3 is running on iOS 5.1. My iPhone 4S is running on iOS 5.0 .1
