I am ok with skipping iTunes, and understand I could play the media using an app that supports DLNA or that can access the it over FTP, HTTP, or CIFS - giving up on the built in music and video player player.

Does anyone know such an app or a way to do this please

Thank you

Can the location of your music files be accessed as a folder in Windows from one of your PCs?

Yes. I can use RAIDar or simply the network drop down on PC windows explorer. Issue is trying to get iTunes to look to that directory and therefore 'import' or 'reference' that latGe music store on my network drive music.

Help!!!!!!

Sorry, not sure if I understand what you are saying. Are you using special software to get to your nas or can you navigate to it directly via windows explorer? If the latter, why can you not simply direct iTunes to the folder on your network that contains the files? Just tell iTunes were to find the music. If your PC can see the network folder without additional app, then iTunes should see it too. If not, well, then your nas is hard to use.

OP might want to clarify.

iTunes on your PC or iTunes (or music player) on your iPad?

In the second post you were asking about third party apps etc. to access the mp3 files on your NAS. NPlayer could be good for that. Has great DLNA connectivity and plays just about any video and audio format.

Thank you and nplayer picks up over my wifi at home on iPad and I can play that way. My real hope was to get iTunes on my iPad linked to my nas drive at home so once synced hopefully I can access all music that way. I just don't know how to point my pic iTunes at the right place - where on iTunes can I say goto the nas folder......

But there is no iTunes app on an iPad. There is the iTunes Store app and the Music app. You cannot point it to a network location, you can only sync music from your PC/Mac iTunes or buy from the iTunes Store.

The best solution for you is probably iTunes Match. For that $25/year iTunes will scan your library and everything in it that Apple sells in its store will be available to you via wifi via the Music App. Items that are not in it will get uploaded to the cloud so it can be played within the music app via wifi. You then get all the advantages of the music app while on wifi. I think it works too if you are on cellular, but that gets into your data plan. You are NOT going to get the Music app to see your NAS, so you can give up on that idea.

Another possibility is Sonos - they have a pretty decent app for iPad which I use to access music from all kind of sources: Spotify, internet radio and also my home NAS
