ipad 2 gmail issues

just got my 1st ipad and all seems well, except that when I;m in my g mail account I can;t seem to get my address book/contacts to sync up. if I want to compose an e mail I have to manually put in an address. It says I have "no contacts". this is really frustrating. everything else about the program seems to be working fine.
has anyone else had this issue or any suggestions?

In your settings you are able to set up your iPad to use Gmail. Go to settings, add an account and set your gmail up right there.

thanks- sadly though I do have my g mail acct set up in settings and everything works fine- except contacts- allmy mail was transferred, but no contacts:-(

any other ideas?
