best thing you can do is go to an apple store and be honest... many times they will give you one freebie for having an accident but will only do it once.
It's definitely worth trying to return it to Apple somehow. It may not be a fault, but Apple are operating a very generous 'replace once only' policy whereby they replace an iPad that's been damaged by dropping or something similar - even when it's clear the iPad was not at all faulty.
Ouch! I cringed a little when I saw that photo. Sorry that it happened. But from what I am hearing u could have a chance trying to at least call Apple and see what happens.
