Wireless speeds are always a little below the hardwired standards. If you're connected via network cable on your iMac, that would definitely explain it.

My iPad is very slow in opening web pages and sometimes will simply not open them at all - just seems to be stuck "searching". I am not having these problems with my laptop which is much faster using the same wifi. All advice welcome..

A slow Internet connection could be caused by any number of reasons. It may be connection or traffic problem. To increase your internet speed in ipad use the following tips given below:
1. Tap Settings > Safari
2. Tap Clear History > Clear History (Clear on iPad)
3. Tap Clear Cookies > Clear Cookies (Clear on iPad)
4. Tap Clear Cache > Clear Cache (Clear on iPad)
5. Check for System Updates
6. Reset Network Settings
7. Clear Browser Cache After, completing this steps, you can check our internet speed whether increase or not
