Apple's Camera Connection Kit can supply a USB port for the iPad, but it's extremely limited in what it can do. You can not use it to connect to the internet. Wi-Fi, and in a very few cases bluetooth, are the only ways to get an internet connection on your iPad. Well, unless you have a 3G iPad, of course. Then you can use that connection.
