in car music

can a ipad mini be used like my ipod nano. about all i would use it for would be music in my 67 elcamino .the stereo has usb ports . I'm getting older and the bigger screen would be nice. will it charge in the car and work like a nano? if so I'm thinking mini 2. thanks ,scott

Hi Scott - I'm assuming that your mean iPad Mini (above in bold) - first, if your stereo has USB ports and your iPod Nano works, then I would assume other iDevices would also; now whether this would provide enough wattage to charge an iPad Mini, I cannot say - you would need to check w/ the manufacturer of the sound system and/or the manual.

For myself, we bought a new Camry 2014 last spring and I can play music from our three iDevices (old iPod touch, iPad Air 2, & iPhone) - there are 3 input choices, i.e. USB, mini-stereo jack, or Bluetooth - when my iPod (or iPhone) is plugged into the USB port, the devices show charging; however, when the iPad Air 2 is used, NO charging is shown - this device typically uses a 10-12 W charger, so I'm assuming the car's USB port is putting out half of that wattage - an iPad Mini requires less power so would likely charge (even my iPad would get a small trickle charge). Scott, if your car stereo also has a 1/8" phone jack, you could use that for music, and buy a charger that plugs into the cigarette lighter with a Lightning connector on the other end. That's what my wife does in her car. But an iPad battery will play music for about 10 hours, so charging while playing may not be so important.

Another alternative would be to get a Bluetooth FM transmitter like this:

I use this with my iPhone and it gives me the added convenience of making or receiving calls hands free.

What stereo are you trying to connect your iPad to? If it has USB ports, it's definitely not the factory El Camino radio

FWIW, the factory stereo in my Hyundai Accent has a USB port an ipad capability. I can plug in an iPad, iPod, iPhone or any other iOS device and then play the music stored on them. Your stereo might have iPod capability.. Check the owner's manual.

As others point out, FM transmitters work well. I use one in my little beater Ford Escort. It has no audio input on the radio, so I set the FM transmitter and radio to the same frequency and listen to the music
