Well, about 6 years ago I bought my first HDTV - the speakers in these TVs then and now typically STINK, so to appreciate an HD movie, good sound is a must - the choices are to run the sound through a decent stereo system or to buy a soundbar (usually w/ a BT subwoofer) - my HDTV had only an optical outlet, thus my decision was to buy a soundbar or a new receiver (there were a few more choices) - I was on my third soundbar ($800+ later) - SO, bought the digital/analog receiver below and the sound from the HDTV is great through my 'real' speakers! Dave :)

On NPR this morning, a story about the soon to be launched and 'tested' newest British aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth - story below first quote w/ link. A few months ago, the United States launched the USS Gerald Ford ("..is the first of the Ford class of aircraft carriers. A second ship, John F. Kennedy, is under construction and a third, Enterprise will have its keel laid in 2018. Eventually the Ford class will replace all ten ships of the Nimitz class, which were built between 1975 and 2009 - link below second quote).

BOY, these are impressive ships costing billions of dollars (or pounds) - could the money be used in other ways (poverty, health care, global warming, etc.)? Just wondering? However, these are amazing products of man regardless of one's feelings. Dave :)

Britain’s largest ever warship is due to squeeze out of its dockyard for the first time as early as Monday afternoon, as the ship heads out on sea trials. The 65,000 ton HMS Queen Elizabeth is expected to slip out of Rosyth dockyard and into open water through an exit with only 14in clearance on either side and 20in of water under the keel. The aircraft carrier will then edge along the Forth under three bridges, including the landmark rail bridge, with a little over six feet to spare. The trials mark the latest milestone in the nearly decade-long building of the Royal Navy’s two carriers, at a cost of more than £6bn. The Navy is also preparing for the warship’s first appearance to attract a concerted Russian spying effort, with submarines, ships and planes try to get a good look at the UK’s new flagship. The aircraft carrier Gerald Ford, the U.S. Navy's latest supercarrier, is finally at sea undergoing testing. The carrier is the most expensive weapons system ever purchased and has faced a two year delay. The ship is on track for commissioning sometime later this month or early May. Named after former president and naval aviator Gerald R. Ford, the carrier is 1,092 feet long and displaces more than 100,000 tons fully loaded. It will have a crew of 4,660—six hundred less than the previous Nimitz class, thanks to increased efficiency and automation—and carry 75 combat aircraft. In accordance with Navy tradition, the ship is currently known as PCU Gerald Ford, or "Pre-Commissioning Unit" until it is officially accepted into the fleet, whereupon it will adopt the USS prefix. Here's a video of Ford departing the shipyard. (Source)

We're arriving in Toronto on Canada Day and will be there on July 4th, Independence Day in the USA - appears that one of our aircraft carriers is nearing Halifax in honor of the Canadian event - Dave :)

It’s already there. The U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower is in Halifax for the Canada Day weekend. BTW, you’ll see the same Canada 150 sign in Toronto as in my photo.
