Hello Jenni - not sure 'where' you live? But in my 'neck of the woods', i.e. Forsyth County, Piedmont North Carolina, black bears are common in the mountains and in the east - the center of the state has not been their territory; HOWEVER, we are now getting black bear sitings several times a year, especially in the western part of the county (one was killed by police a few years ago because of its potential danger) - the map below shows the bear's territorial expansion from 1971 to 2010 in North Carolina - a current map would show even further extension. Dave

I live in Asheville, NC. We see these bears all over the place. It's great seeing them but I worry about people and the bears alike with them roaming around like they do. Ty for the info!

Well, you must have mentioned that before, just had a deja vu feeling - we visit the North Carolina & Virginia mountains often; Blowing Rock is just an hour from us in W-S and I can get to the Biltmore Estate in 2 1/2 hours w/ good traffic flow - early next month, we have a trip planned to Highlands, so might be seeing some black bears - over the decades, I've seen at least three bears cross the road ahead of my car while mountain driving - Dave
