Great pictures, Joanne. Is your window quite close to the shrubs? Or have you used some kind of "zoom"? In any bird pictures I take with the iPhone they look tiny!

My window is about 2 or 3 metres from the shrubs.
I was using my Canon DSLR and a 70 - 200 mm lens combined with a teleconverter, fixed to a tripod. The whole thing looks like this:

These pictures wouldn't have been possible with an iPhone.

They are House Sparrows, Passer domesticus. The ones with gray caps are males. Native to Europe, they are now invasive alien pests nearly everywhere. In North America, they have reduced populations of some native bird species dramatically due to their prodigious breeding success, lack of native predators, and competition for nesting cavities.

They are one of only four bird species not protected by law in the U.S. (The others are Muscovy, European Starling, and Rock Pigeon). All were introduced by misguided European immigrants who had no idea how much havoc would ensue.

The Muscovy duck? I've only ever seen one, so I wouldn't have thought it was common. Of course, that could just be local.

This is the duck, which hung out at the nearby river long enough I eventually got around to taking a picture of it.

Amazingly, when I first moved to this house which is next to a quite a large pond, a Muscovy duck laid two eggs in my front garden, but sadly abandoned them.

nope but there is a petting zoo part. its actually a wildlife sancuary.

Another pic that just appeared on my FB page posted by my BIL - for those who may have seen my new posts in the Long Island (LI) travelogue, the area was hit w/ a winter blizzard - he got about 18 inches of snow/ice - he is at the end of LI in Montauk - East Hampton is about 30 mins west - well, the pic below was posted the next day on the East Hampton beach showing some snow on the dunes in the background but this eerie appearance of globs of frozen snow/sea water/foam likely shaped by the waves - seems like another planet! Dave

Pebble Beach Pro-AM - watching the PGA tour event this weekend which is being held on the beautiful Monterey Peninsula (see aerial map) - I've visited nearly a half dozen times - so much to see and do, i.e. the towns of Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel; the fabulous 17-mile drive and the famous golf courses, particularly Pebble Beach - just a few pics of the Pacific seaside holes and the coastal terrain - would love to go back! Dave

There are a number of beautiful golf courses on that peninsula - plenty of aerial coverage shown during the tournament, so anyone w/ an interest in the beauty of this California coast in Monterey, check your local TV coverage - for me, I have my DVR set to record at 3 PM EST for the CBS HD channel w/ Nick Faldo and Jim Nantz - recommended!
