First pic, a photograph by David Shipper (Beaufort, SC) called Lovely Bones - taken at Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, GA - I purchased the matted photo and made the frame in my shop from Ambrosia Maple - description of the wood quoted below. Satellite view of the island w/ two beach areas circled, both w/ dead trees - Susan & I vacationed there in April of last year (see my travelogue HERE, if interested). Remaining pics - one from Driftwood Beach (web source) and the last two my own near Glory Beach. Dave

Much like Spalted Maple and other forms of figured maple, Ambrosia Maple is technically not a specific species of Maple, but rather a general description of any type of Maple that has been infested by ambrosia beetles. The beetles bore into the tree, and with it bring fungus that discolors the wood.

Yesterday when I was putting together the post above on my ambrosia maple picture frame, I was looking at some 'other' projects made from this gorgeous wood - the spectrum is broad from small projects to large tables and even rooms, such as a kitchen - just a few of the web images below that I found - NOW, I'm getting the urge to come up w/ a different and larger project for myself! Hi Pauley.. - beautiful works! Congrats - have about everything in my shop but never bought a lathe - your turning is excellent! Did you do the birds, also? Wife and I have a house full of various art works, including turned bowls and vases - most recent purchase from last spring - a segmented vase bought in Bluffton, SC - local Carolina woodworker (2 pics below). Dave

I didn't take this one, but the large hands are mine. I had just placed the bird on the small hand, so the little girl could "help" me release it after banding (ringing).
