B&W saves the day.

With the exception of the last one, none of these was good, but even that one looks a lot better in black-and-white.

First, a dead bug in Gypsy's water bowl. iPhone.

Then, a couple of fowl shots from my walk along the river today: Canon EOD 20 D.

And a duck, in color, just because.

B&W (greyscale) accents composition more than color does. It's a whole different thing. Some things certainly look better in B&W despite what Paul Simon said in the song "Kodachrome". ;)

That's what I was thinking. I like it better, but I'm a compulsive cropper. It's generally the first thing I do with a photo when I'm editing; finding the most important subject and balancing it in the frame, or highlighting the relationship between different elements of the photo. In my twisted little mind, it's fun. :)

Of course the important thing is whether you like it better.

B&W can also highlight textures and contrasts.

It's not like these things are absent in color photos. Done right you can get wonderful compositions and texture. It's just harder to draw attention to them with to many distracting and often clashing colors.

Which is why color studies, where a photo's subject is primarily of one or two colors, can also produce unexpectedly interesting photos.

It looks quite good. I was lucky that the car was stopped at a red light when I took the picture.

Good shots! I don't think they would have the same impact in colour...probably because we tend to take colour for granted now and see black and white with a fresh viewpoint...well, these days anyway:D

Woodstork in the Everglades close up, and manipulated in a 'sketch' app - in B&W and color. I believe the woodstork is the only stork native to N. America.

I reduced the photos because my DSL has gotten very slow. 3 attempts to fix it so far have failed. Another tech due today. Wish me luck.

Very nice. There is almost never a need to to send full sized photos to a website. Most people are viewing them on mobile devices or lower resolution displays anyway.

Good luck with the tech today.

And the bright star to the left and up from them (in a line) is Regulus; not showing in your photo. Following the arc formed by these stars, Saturn is near the south east horizon, roughly the same hight as Venus (in the early evening). It's only slightly brighter than the surrounding stars.

Star Walk is a fun app. :)
